COVID-19 Risk Assessment
Carried out by Tiffany Hair & Beauty at Bridge Street, Aberdeen, AB11 6JL updated on 31 October 2020.
Risks will be reviewed and updated on an ongoing basis.
RISK TYPE
Reception area, cross contamination through bookings, arrival and payments.
Measures to Minimise Risk to staff and clients:
- When possible, keep the salon door locked. Do not enter the salon until the receptionist unlocks the door, making it safe for you to enter.
- Appointments must be made in advance either by our online booking system or email or telephone. No walk-in appointments.
- Clients to be told before arriving for appointment about changes by way of email, or referred to our website.
- Clients will be asked to cancel if they feel unwell.
- Arrive into the salon wearing a mask.
- Arrive with a minimal size bag/jacket. We cannot hang up your jacket nor take your bag. You will be provided with a bag to put your jacket/bag into and keep with you at your position.
- A sneeze guard has been fitted to our reception desk for the purpose of payments by card machine.
- Payments to be made by card where possible, and a strict process has been devised for making sure no cross contamination from using pinpad.
- No cash payments unless no alternative.
- Floor marking at reception for guidance on where to stand at a safe distance.
- Reception and waiting area disinfected regularly including door handles.
- Receptionist to take all bills, staff to leave clients and not to stand at reception.
Action to be taken:
- Make sure PPE is available at all times.
- Each client will be provided with a PPE kit upon arrival (a charge will be levied according to the kit required for the service carried out eg cutting, or colouring etc)
- Clients will be asked to remove their own mask and wear the mask provided in their PPE kit.
- Antibacterial hand gel available for all clients and staff.

Cross contamination at the backwash area.
Measures to Minimise Risk to staff and clients:
- All staff to wear visors and PPE
- All clients to wear masks and PPE
- Only 3 basins used at any one time (leaving a basin non-operational between each operational basin)
- All basins, taps, and seats to be disinfected after each use.
- Staff to guide the client to the backwash using the route map to get from your position to the backwash area.
- Either one fresh laundered towel or one disposable towel to be used for each client.
- Staff to wash or sanitize hands before and after using the backwash area.
Actions to be taken:
- Cleaning products to be available at the backwash area at all times

Cross contamination at the cutting/colouring positions.
Measures to Minimise Risk to staff and clients:
- Clients to be seated in designated seats so social distancing measures are applied.
- Clients wear masks at all times.
- Client will be provided with a disposable gown in their PPE pack. This must be taken away by the client at the end of the service and can be brought back to be reused as a gown for life, whilst it is still usable.
- Staff to wear visor, disposable aprons and gloves where possible.
- Each stylist has their designated position and work station.
- All equipment eg cutting, drying, brushes, products will be sterilised using specialist products after each client.
- Position and chair will be cleaned and sterilized between each client.
- Trolley and stools to be sanitized after each use.
- Cutting collars to be sanitized after each use.

Measures to Minimise Risk to staff and clients:
- No teas or coffees will be provided
- Water can be provided in a disposable cup, but preferable for clients to bring their own bottled water.
- All magazines and leaflets to be removed from the salon.
- All information regarding service prices will be provided on our website.

Contamination in toilets and wash areas.
Measures to Minimise Risk to staff and clients:
- Toilets to be disinfected on a regular basis
- Hand soap, hand sanitizer, disposable paper towels provided at all times
- Bins emptied regularly
Actions to be taken:
- Disinfectant spray to be used on door handles, toilet seat, flush handle, sink and taps.
RISK TYPE
Overcrowding in the salon, being unable to social distance.
Measures to Minimise Risk to staff and clients:
- Less stylists/juniors allocated to any one shift.
- Number of clients will be limited on the premises at any one time, and must observe social distancing at all times.
- Clients asked to arrive on time. Don’t be too early and don’t be late. (If a client is late, they risk having their appointment cancelled and may still be charged).
- Clients asked to arrive alone.
- Children will not be allowed in the salon unless having a service done.
Actions to be taken:
- Client numbers in the salon will be monitored at all times, and may have to wait outside for their appointment if a stylist is running behind.

Lack of PPE
Measures to Minimise Risk to staff and clients:
- Levels of PPE should be monitored daily to make sure levels are kept high.
- This will be the responsibility of all staff.
- Clients will be asked to arrive with their own mask, but to switch to wearing the mask provided by the salon in their PPE kit.
- Clients will be provided with disposable gown, cape, gloves, and towel (in accordance with the requirements for the service they are booked for).
- A PPE charge will be added to all bills to cover the PPE costs.
Actions to be taken:
- Stock list for PPE to be created.
- Set up billing on the till for relevant PPE kit/s.

Inappropriate cleaning and hygiene
Measures to Minimise Risk to staff and clients:
- Salon, doors, handles, surfaces, and toilets to be disinfected regularly.
- All salon work spaces to be cleaned after every client.
- All hair kits to be sterilised after each client using barbicide sprays.
- Staff to have clean clothing/uniform daily, to have clean hair daily, and tie up if possible.
- Staff to wash hands regularly throughout the day.
- Staff arrive in plenty of time to get into PPE each day.
- Staff visors to be cleaned daily with appropriate spray and microfibre cloth.
- Staff PPE to remain in the salon, not to be worn out of the salon, nor taken home.
Actions to be taken:
- Clients receive information by email before attending an appointment.

Measures to Minimise Risk to staff and clients:
- If first aid is required, staff members should protect themselves with PPE including mask, face shield/visor, gloves and apron.
- First aid kit will be fully stocked.

Staff belongings and break/lunch arrangements not followed
Measures to Minimise Risk to staff and clients:
- All staff belongings will be stored in the staffroom to stop cross contamination.
- Food and drinks are not permitted on the salon floor, nor in colours areas, nor in any area where client services are carried out.
- All breaks must be taken in the staffroom or outside of the salon and social distance. Do not wear salon PPE outside of the salon.
- If using the kitchen area staff must disinfect the area and wash all dishes in the dishwasher or in hot soapy water.
- Hands must be washed before re-entering the salon/client floor area and clean PPE used.
- All staff should try to social distance as much as possible.
- Phones are not permitted on the salon floor.
- No personal deliveries to the salon is permitted.
Actions to be taken:
- Cleaning products available at all times.
- PPE to be available at all times.
RISK TYPE
Suspect Covid 19 or illness in staff.
Measures to Minimise Risk to staff and clients:
- All staff will be asked not to come to work if they feel unwell.
- If any staff member has symptoms of Covid 19 they will be asked to self-isolate for 7 days or be tested if possible.
- If symptoms of Covid 19 start at work, staff members will be asked to go straight home or go into the staff room on their own to self-isolate until they can leave the premises.
- All areas the staff member has been will then be deep cleaned.
Actions to be taken:
- Observe current guidelines if this happens in the salon.
